PSIsafe Management Administrator Guide: Content Managers

Version 12.0.0.3000

Content Managers: Overview

Content Managers are the programs associated with specific filtypes, designated by their extensions, such as PDF, PNG, TIF, etc. These programs vary depending on your specific business practices and software preferences, and help PSIsafe load the proper application when you attempt to preview or edit your content. To access the Managers page, you must have the Managers section permission under Management within your user profile (User Settings) or login as the system Administrator.

The Managers homepage displays a list of your content managers by name, and their associated program paths in the next two columns. To search for a specific manager in a long list, use the Quick Search field at the bottom of the list.

Click the "Add/Edit" button to begin the content manager setup.

  • Manager Name - Enter a name for the manager (i.e., Access, PDF, Excel).
  • Type - Select the type from the drop down list. The type tells PSIsafe what type of document this manager is taking care of. There are currently 10 different content types.

  • Audio – Any sort of audio file such as MP3 or WAV
  • Electronic Form – Adobe PDF Forms with fillable form fields
  • Hyper Text – A web page, of some sort (HTML, MHT, XML)
  • Image – Any type of image file (Tiff, JPG, PNG)
  • Text – Any plaintext file (Notepad, TXT)
  • Video – Any sort of video file (MP4, MOV, AVI)
  • Word-processing – Any sort of electronic document created by a word processor or spreadsheet program (DOC, DOCX, XLS, XLSX)
  • Message – A Microsoft Outlook file (MSG)
  • Word Merge – A specific type of word document that uses the Microsoft Word Merge functions to link PSIsafe folder indexes to Word Merge fields.
  • Other – Any other content type which does not fit the categories above.
  • Disable - This checkbox disables the content manager.
  • Extensions - Enter the file extension that the defined manager will control in the Extensions section. Multiple extensions may be entered for the same manager. For example, an image manager may view TIF, JPG, and PNG, and many other common filetypes. Enter the extension name and click the Add button. To remove an extension from the list, click the extension in the list box and then click the Remove button.
  • Programs - NOTE: The entries in these fields apply globally to all users by default, unless otherwise specified in a Local Manager (see Step 2). In Microsoft Windows, Under Control Panel > Default programs, extensions are associated with specific application paths on your connected drives. Selecting the checkbox "Use Windows File Association" will start the program which has been associated in Default Programs. If you would like to instead specify the path location, keep in mind that this location must be the same on all workstations attempting to access your PSIsafe installation. Simply type in the path, i.e. C:\Program Files (x86)\Company\Program\Program.EXE, and the manager will be associated with the EXE in this location.
  • Parameters - Enter any parameters that need to be defined for the manager to launch the program properly. Parameters allow multiple documents to be open in the same program. Here are a list of available Parameters and their popular counterparts:
    • Microsoft Word - /W
    • Adobe Acrobat or Adobe Reader - /N
    • Outlook - /F
    • Excel - /X
Local Managers: Step 2 of 3

Occasionally there will be instances where an end user may prefer a different version of a specific program, such as Adobe Acrobat vs. Adobe Reader. Additionally, the users may wish to use these programs only on certain workstations within the network, or on an associated system. PSIsafe supports localization of content managers to specific machines via Local Managers. A local content manager points a certain content type to a different program instead of the global document manager configured in Step 1.

Click the Add/Edit button to define a local manager.

Click the Delete button to remove a local manager.

  • Local Host Name - Enter the computer name to associate with the local manager. This will be entered in the Local Host Name field. This is the same as the IPv6 Machine Name.
  • Local Document Handling Programs - Enter the path to the local program, similar to defining the program on the Details screen in Step 1. The program defined here will only launch on the PC that has been defined under the Local host name.
Summary: Step 3 of 3

Review the Content Manager settings provided in the summary, and click “Finish” when complete to create the Content Manager.
